Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he is not certain that goalkeeper David de Gea would renew his contract before it expires at the end of the season.

Mourinho’s fears that with United struggling to challenge for trophies this season, could make the Spain international consider his future elsewhere even though the Red Devils have the option of a 12-month extension.

The Spaniard could leave on a free transfer with Juventus his possible destination after a deal with Real Madrid failed to materialise at the beginning of the season.

“I am not confident,” Mourinho told told Sky Sports News. “I cannot find the word in English, but let’s see what happens. Only the club, David and his people can answer that.

“My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David.”
