Nigerian soldier claims gold at World Military Wrestling Championship

Nigerian Army personnel, Corporal Hannah Reuben, renowned for her Commonwealth Games silver and All African Games achievements clinched gold in the women’s 76 kg category at the ongoing 36th World Military Wrestling Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Expressing gratitude to the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their support, Reuben hailed the preparation provided by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja and other service chiefs. She highlighted the crucial role their backing played in her success.

“I want to thank the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja and other service chiefs for ensuring wrestlers in the Nigerian Military attended the 36th World Military Wrestling Championship,” Reuben said.

“The preparations for the tournament was top notch because we were provided with all the necessary logistics to excel.”

In other results, cpmpatriot Esther Ojolaide secured a silver medal in the women’s 57kg event, while anticipation rises for the performances of eight more Nigerian wrestlers scheduled to compete on Saturday.

With Odunayo Adekuoroye being the sole wrestler currently qualified for the Olympics, Reuben expressed hope for more qualifications from her fellow wrestlers.

The 2023 World Military Wrestling Championship began on November 27th and will end on December 3rd, 2023.
