No Aussie Open because baby is on the way-Petra Kvitova

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has revealed she is expecting her first child, taking to social media to announce the news and explain why she won’t be attending the Australian Open.

Kvitova is currently down to play in the Australian Open, but did not travel to Melbourne and will not take part in any of the qualifiers set to commence on January 8.

The 33-year-old, who married her coach Jiri Vanek in July 2023, has said she will miss playing in the tournament but insisted she is ‘looking forward to spending some time at home while preparing for this exciting next chapter’ in her life.

Kvitova took to social media to share a photo of herself and Vanek holding a scan and baby grow. She wrote the accompanying caption: ‘On the first day of 2024 I wanted to wish you a happy new year and share the exciting news that Jiri and I will be welcoming a baby into our family this summer!’.

Kvitova followed her initial post up with another, stating: ‘While I will miss my annual trip to Australia and competing in the sport I love, I am looking forward to spending some time at home while preparing for this exciting next chapter in our lives.’

On her own part two time Aussie Open champion Naomi Osaka who took time off to have her baby is already back on court and expected to participate in this year’s championship. Already she has flagged off her effort with impressive run at the Brisbane international.
