Onome Ebi targets semi-final spot at Women’s World Cup

Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi believes the team can reach the semi-final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ebi was named in Nigeria’s 23 woman squad for the World Cup and it will be her Sixth appearance at finals, a record for an African player.

Nigeria are placed in the Group A with co hosts Australia, Olympic Champions Canada and debutants Republic of Ireland.

On paper its a tough Group, but Ebi is confident the team can make it to the next round, and reach the last four.

“As a team, I think we can aim for the semi-finals. We’ve got high-quality, experienced players and some really talented youngsters,” the 40-year-old told FIFA.com.

The Falcons best performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup was a quarter-final finish at 1999 edition.

The team however lost out to samba girls of Brazil 4-3 in dramatic fashion.

“It really is doable (reaching semi final), and it’s up to us to grab the chance with both hands and show the world that we are Nigeria and that we’re not just there to make up the numbers. I’m ready for a sixth World Cup, and we’re ready as a team.”
