Poor Run: Man United dump end-of-season awards

Manchester United have canceled their end-of-season awards after players requested that the ceremony not take place following their dismal campaign.

United are guaranteed to finish on their lowest points tally in the Premier League, even if they beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, and could end up with the ignominy of a Europa Conference League place.

Their season hit a low point in their last outing, when they were humiliated 4-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion on 7 May.

The club has held the dazzling awards ceremony for more than a decade, but Mirror reports that plans for this year’s gala dinner, to be held at Old Trafford, have been scrapped.

The players asked club officials to cancel the end-of-season event amid embarrassment over their disastrous campaign, according to The Mirror.

Bruno Fernandes has won United’s Player of the Year award, named after legendary former manager Sir Matt Busby, for the past two seasons.

United have missed out on qualification for the Champions League and may not even make the Europa League places if they suffer a defeat at Selhurst Park.

They also failed to get past the Champions League round of 16 and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Championship side Middlesbrough.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November following a 4-1 loss to Watford, replacing him with caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick.

The German’s spell at Old Trafford has also been a poor one, leading to growing animosity from fans furious at the club’s long decline under controversial Glazer ownership.

United are ready to embark on a new era under incoming boss Erik ten Hag, who is expected to attend the Palace game on Sunday.

Ten Hag has signed a three-year deal to replace Rangnick, with the option of a fourth.
