Ramsey pounced on a Ronaldo free kick which was heading for the net to deny him the opportunity of becoming the first man to net against 34 different teams in Europe’s elite competition.

“My instinct took over to make sure that it went over the line.

“I’ve apologised to Cristiano.”

“I thought the keeper was a lot closer to me and had a chance of diving back and maybe clearing it,” he told reporters after the match.

Ronaldo remains stuck on 33 alongside Lionel Messi and Raul.
