Referee Turpin for Inter vs. Milan UCL semi-final

French referee Clement Turpin has been chosen to officiate the Champions League semi-final between Inter and Milan on Tuesday evening.

It kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) at San Siro and has the Nerazzurri as the ‘home’ team, although that is now largely irrelevant considering the away goals rule has been scrapped.

Inter won the first leg 2-0, giving them a healthy advantage going into this showdown for a place in the Istanbul Final against either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

UEFA appointed French referee Turpin, assisted by Nicolas Danos, Benjamin Pages and fourth official Stephanie Frappart.

The VAR team is also French, Jerome Brisard and Benoit Millot.

Curiously, May 16 is also Turpin’s 41st birthday, so he will be hoping to celebrate with a reliable performance.

He officiated last season’s Champions League Final, which saw Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0, and the 2020-21 Europa League Final between Villarreal and Manchester United.

Turpin oversaw three Inter defeats, the most recent 2-0 at home to Bayern Munich on September 7, and a 2-1 group phase win over Tottenham Hotspur in 2018.

Milan’s record is even worse, with a home defeat to Arsenal in 2018 and a pair of draws with FC Porto and Tottenham, the most recent being the second leg of the Round of 16 in March.
