Rohr tells Rufai: Show me a better goalkeeper than Uzoho

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has stoutly defended the choice of teenage goalkeeper Francis Uzoho as the first choice goalkeeper of the Eagles in the midst of criticisms of the goalkeeper’s recent performances against Libya in the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ (AFCON’s) qualifiers.

Among those that were not impressed with Uzoho’s performance in the 2019 AFCON double header qualifiers against Libya included former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper legend Peter Rufai.

The Super Eagles legend opened up on the issue as a guest on a Lagos based radio sports program during the Eagles’ match against Libya in Uyo.

Rufai said that Eagles handler Rohr shouldn’t have given Uzoho such a huge responsibility as a teenage and inexperienced goalkeeper adding that a more matured goalkeeper should have done a better job in the goal post for the Eagles than Uzoho.

But Rohr has disagreed with Rufai and defended his preferred choice of Uzoho as Eagles’ number 1.

“After the end of international career of Vincent Enyeama and the illness of Carl Ikeme we had Ikechukwu Ezenwa who did very well in the double header matches against Cameroon for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers. But after that he doesn’t play enough and right now he is looking for a club. So we will like to see him more playing in a club. So we had this big problem to find another goalkeeper after Enyeama and Ikeme.

“Daniel Akpeyi has been impressive for his club in South Africa. We have also tried out Dele Ajiboye who is also a very good goalkeeper. We have seen Dele Alampasu another young goalkeeper too but right now he is not playing for his club. So I can tell you confidently that I have a good technical luggage already.
