Serie A: Lukaku is the hottest topic in Italian football now

Romelu Lukaku has officially been labelled as the most talked about footballer in the Italian national media over the course of the summer transfer window according to a recent study.

Carried out by Mediamonitor.it, a platform which uses technology to track and monitor speech, it was revealed that Lukaku was mentioned more times on television and radio than any other player or coach in Italy this summer.

The study found that Lukaku’s name was mentioned on a total of 1,193 occasions in the period between June 16, the final day of training last season, and September 1, the close of the transfer window.

The Belgian had made headlines both in Italy and across Europe when it became clear that he would not be re-joining Inter, having held in-depth discussions with archrivals Juventus.

In the end, Lukaku joined neither and eventually joined Jose Mourinho’s Roma on loan from Chelsea until the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

The second-most mentioned player in the Italian media this summer was Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, who, for a while over the last few months, had been linked with a move to Chelsea as part of a potential exchange deal for the aforementioned Lukaku.

Davide Frattesi ranks third on the list with 455 mentions, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen comes in fourth with 419 mentions, whilst Gianluca Scamacca, who joined Atalanta from West Ham this summer, comes in fifth with 394.

Other individuals inside Mediamonitor’s top 10 include Alvaro Morata, Andre Onana, Rudi Garcia, Sandro Tonali and Marcelo Brozovic.
