Smalling signs new Roma contract – report

Chris Smalling has reportedly put pen to paper on a new two-year contract with Roma, extending his stay in the Italian capital to 2025.

The English centre back joined the Giallorossi from Manchester United in August 2019, initially arriving on loan before making a permanent move for €15m the following year. He has proven himself an important figure in Jose Mourinho’s squad, being an experienced and reliable defender.

Smalling has missed Roma’s last five outings across all competitions due to a hamstring injury, but Mourinho hopes to recover the 33-year-old for the second leg of the Europa League semi-finals against Bayer Leverkusen.

Calciomercato.com reports that Smalling’s agent James Featherstone was in Trigoria yesterday to put pen to paper on the defender’s new contract with Roma, a two-year deal worth €3.5m net per season.

The final bureaucratic details are now being resolved and his new deal is expected to be announced at some point in the coming days, possibly just after their Europa League semi-final second leg with Bayer Leverkusen.
