Sunusi is eyeing more goals with the U-23
Sunusi provided two assists and scored one himself in the Nigeria U23 5-0 spanking of Sudan in the 2019 U23 AFCON qualifier played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba last week.
Sunusi told Sportinglife.ng that he never doubted his ability and that he is thrilled that he was able to give his best to his country in the deciding leg after they had lost the first leg by a lone goal defeat
in Omdurman.
“I am happy with the goal that I scored today which is my first for the national team,” Sunusi told Sportinglife.ng
“I hope to do more with more opportunities given to me.”
When asked if he was under any pressure as soon as he was introduced, Sunusi said that his involvement in the NPFL with Nasarawa United has got him well prepared for the upcoming challenges including playing
for the national team.
He also revealed that the recognition from the petrochemical company, Eunisell for his emergence as the hotshot for the topflight last season has also kept him on his toes aware that he must continue to
keep rising to sustain the momentum.
“I am not under any pressure because my involvement in the Nigerian league with Nasarawa United has been of help to me,” he added.
“I saw the Sudanese as my mates in the league and it allowed me to play freely against them without fear. I came with the intention of showing the Asaba crowd what I could do and I am thrilled that I was
able to do that.
“The recognition from Eunisell really gave me a sense of belonging and it is motivating to do more. Whenever I am on the pitch and I remember that I scored ten goals last season to become the highest scorer it
gives me the urge to want to do more.
“I don’t have any special training to perfect my shooting ability it just comes naturally. I know that all eyes are on me now after emerging as the highest goal scorer last season and I am eager to always put in my best to ensure that I do not disappoint anybody.”
Sunusi was the joint highest scorer in the league alongside Mfon Udoh of Akwa United with 10 goals each last season and they were both rewarded by Eunisell with 2 million naira each for achieving that feat.
