Taiwo Awoniyi out of Nigeria vs Zimbabwe WCQ

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been ruled out of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe with a groin injury.

Awoniyi sustained the injury in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Lesotho on Thursday night in Uyo.

The 26-year-old was replaced by OGC Nice star, Terem Moffi a minute before the hour mark.

The former Liverpool player has left the Super Eagles Four Points Hotel base in Uyo and is flying back to his Premier League club for further assessment of the injury.

Awoniyi recently returned to action after picking a groin injury in Nottingham Forest’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace in September.

However, Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has enough cover for the forward with the likes of Victor Boniface, Moffi and Umar Sadiq ready to take his place.

The three-time African champions will face Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Huye Stadium, Butare on Sunday.

The encounter will kick-off at 2:00pm Nigeria time.
