UCL: Real Madrid coach Ancelotti excited after seeing off Shakhtar Donetsk

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was delighted with their 2-1 victory over Champions League opponents Shakhtar Donetsk.

Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior struck for the win.

Ancelotti said: “I’m satisfied. We played pretty well. Our rival performed. I guess we needed more accuracy in front of goal but the key thing always is to create lots of goal chances and we did that.

“We did drop the intensity a little, we felt comfortable and it needed me to remind them at half-time that the game was not finished. We played lots of good football but it was one of those dangerous matches when if you don’t score the goals you merit then you can be caught out.

“I know that my team only relaxes at the right time. When they can’t they don’t. This was normal tonight, I’m satisfied that my team played well, Fede Valverde played well, Kroos controlled possession well. Obviously intensity is very important but you can’t have it to perfection all the time.

“It was important to try to make the group under control so that we can concentrate on La Liga business more easily. I changed Rodrygo’s position a little, to play more centrally, to try to make sure that Shakhtar’s centre-halves, who are good on the ball, didn’t have an easy time. His change of position was an attacking one and the idea was to press Shakhtar more and to do so better.”
