UFC: Kamaru Usman sends message to Masvidal after open challenge

Nigeria’s Kamaru Usman has sent a savage message to Jorge Masvidal after the BMF champion volunteered to fight him at UFC 251.

Gilbert Burns was slated to face Usman for the welterweight championship on ‘Fight Island’ but a positive COVID-19 test means he will not be competing on July 11 in Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal was quick to react and confirm he is ready to step up to the challenge by posting an image featuring his iconic nickname along with the definition: “Gamebred is an animal that has been bred to be game.”

The Cuban-American fighter’s manager Abraham Kawa also revealed the 35-year old is more than willing to take the huge fight at such short notice.

And Usman would appear to be well up for a defence of his title against Masvidal judging by his latest tweet.

“Might be time for the Pig to squeal,” he wrote on his Twitter account, clearly referring to Masvidal.

Usman-Masvidal for the welterweight strap on the dunes is a considerably more exciting prospect than the scheduled defence against Burns, so here’s hoping Masvidal and Dana White are able to put their differences aside regarding a recent pay dispute to make it happen.

Masvidal has recently expressed his interest in a future showdown with undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, while he’s also been challenged to a “winner takes all” superfight with Colby Covington, who was knocked out by Usman at UFC 245.

The former interim welterweight champion also reacted to Burns’ positive test, posting a picture of him catching the Nigerian Nightmare with a high kick in their December fight. There’s serious animosity between Usman and Mas

vidal, notably their heated altercation at a Super Bowl media day back in January when they had to be pulled apart in Miami.
