Why we are playing Cameroon, Gernot Rohr reveals

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that the two friendly games against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon give him a chance to try out new players ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September.

The three-time African champions take on their arch-rivals in a doubleheader friendly, with the first match taking place on June 4 at the Weiner Neustadt Stadium in Austria.

Preparations for the game have been far from ideal for Rohr following the withdrawal of six players, including Victor Osimhen.

Nonetheless, there are some new players like Terem Moffi in the team, and Rohr believes the two games against Cameroon is a chance for them to stake a claim in the team.

“This test match, you see many players are not here, and it’s opportunity for us to try new players, to see new faces and have the chance to show something,” Rohr told the Super Eagles media page.

Rohr also added the two games would serve as test matches for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde.

“It’s always important to prepare well for the World Cup,” the former Bordeaux coach said.

It’s the last opportunity now to do something to prepare well for our World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde, Rohr added.

The Super Eagles road to World Cup qualification starts in September with a home game against Liberia.
