Yusuf’s Royal Antwerp claim first Belgian League title on dramatic final day

Alhassan Yusuf is a Jupiler League Champion with Royal Antwerp after their 2-2 draw with KRC Genk on Sunday.

Yusuf played his part in the keenly contested game at the Cegeka Arena, coming on came on as a second half substitute.

It was his 27th appearance for the Mark Van Bommel’s team in the league this season.

Genk needed outright win to be Champions after Union Saint-Gilloise had lost 3-1 to Club Brugge, while a draw would be enough for The Reds.

Nigerian, Tolu Arokodare got the first goal of the game for Genk in the first half, converting a pass from Bilal El Khannous on the stroke of half time.

Gyrano Kerk restored parity for Antwerp in the second half, but Bryan Heynen put Genk back in front late in the game.

Genk were just two minutes away from being declared Champions, before Toby Alderweireld scored a stunning long range shot in 94th minute to hand the title over to Antwerp.

It was Royal Antwerp’s first league title since 1957, they also won the Belgian Cup earlier in the season.

As for Arokodare and Genk, they’ll be playing in UEFA Champions League qualification round next season.
