AFCON qualifier: Why I invited professionals for Sao Tome – Peseiro

Nigeria’s Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has finally responded to the questions Nigerians have been asking about the players he invited for the dead rubber game against Sao Tome and Princippe.

Football stakeholders and fans across the country had queried the Portuguese gaffer for going ahead to invite a huge number of foreign players to the game.

Some are insisting that home-based players should have been used for the game since the team has already qualified.

Peseiro during a press conference organised on Saturday revealed that there is no time to gather the players together before the competition in January.

“You know the national team is not a club where you have enough time to build your team. You spend days, weeks and months together.

“For us, we just have to make use of the transfer windows to work together. After now, we will be together again in October before the World Cup qualifiers start in November.

“So, now we are thinking about building a more cohesive team”, he said.

Nigeria will host Sao Tome and Principe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
