Boost for Cameroon as Onana confirms readiness for AFCON

Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have been handed a major boost after Man United safe hand and Cameroon international Andre Onana confirmed his readiness to play in AFCON next year in Cote d Ivoire.

The 27-year-old player wants to defend Cameroon, his home country’s national team goalpost, in the tournament scheduled for January 13 to February 11.

Onana’s decision means he would be unavailable for Manchester United’s matches that would be played at the time. These include the Premier League, the FA Cup, and potentially the Carabao Cup and the Champions League, should Cameroon reach the final.

There were expectations that Onana, who arrived at Old Trafford this summer in a £47.2 million deal from Inter Milan, would miss the 2023 AFCON tournament after a bust-up with head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup.

Recall that the event saw the player leave Cameroon’s camp in Qatar to fly back home.

However, Onana made his return as the Indomitable Lions crushed Burundi 3-0 in September and played in the 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a friendly this month.

United have been unsure whether they would lose Onana at the start of 2024, but according to the UK Metro, Onana has now opted to represent his national side at AFCON.
