I have no rift with Onazi–Rohr

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has cleared the air on his relationship with his Vice Captain Ogenyi Onazi after he did not invite the player for the team’s last Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.

Speaking on Monday Night Football on SuperSport, Rohr who failed to shed light on why he dropped the midfielder, despite being fit for the match, however said his exclusion was not at the behest of his employers.

“After compiling my list of players for any particular match, l submit to the President of the Nigeria Football Federation and the technical committee. I have to submit for them to approve. However there has never been any time where they have asked me to drop a player. That l would not accept,” the coach said.

“It is not true that l have issues with Ogenyi,” he added.

There were media reports that the Eagles coach dropped the Trabzonspor of Turkey player due to fitness issues which Onazi has however come out to debunk insisting that his omission was deliberate.

Last month, the player missed the team’s double header matches against Libya prior to the South Africa fixture due to injury while in the Eagles camp, but has since recovered and has been playing regularly.
