Marseille appoint Jean-Louis Gasset as new head coach

Marseille have confirmed the arrival of Jean-Louis Gasset as their new head coach.

The former Bordeaux and Ivory Coast manager takes over following the exit of Gennaro Gattuso, whose sacking was announced on Tuesday morning after just 24 games in charge of Les Olympiens.

Marseille did not confirm the length of Gasset’s contract, but the 70-year-old is understood to have only penned a short-term deal until the end of the 2023-24 season.

“It’s a huge honour for me to be joining this legendary club, Olympique de Marseille. I can’t wait to start working with this group to prepare for the upcoming fixtures and give the best of ourselves,” Gasset told the official Marseille website.

Gasset’s appointment to the Marseille helm comes just a few weeks after his highly publicised departure from his position as Ivory Coast manager midway through the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Elephants lost two of their three group-stage games.

Ivory Coast still made it through to the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed sides, but Gasset was relieved of his duties, and caretaker boss Emerse Fae subsequently led the host nation to glory over Nigeria in the final.

Marseille are ninth in the Ligue 1 table with 30 points from their opening 22 fixtures of the season, and Gasset’s first game in charge comes on Thursday night, when Les Olympiens host Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of their Europa League playoff tie after a 2-2 draw in last week’s opening clash.
