Middlesbrough players ‘told they need to take pay cuts’

 

A number of senior Middlesbrough players have reportedly been told that they will need to take pay cuts if they want to stay with the club.

The Teessiders are currently in their final season of parachute payments from the Premier League, and chairman Steve Gibson has accordingly charged boss Jonathan Woodgate with bringing the wage bill down.

This change will most affect players in the last year of their current contracts with Boro, according to Sportsmail.

The report indicates that those most likely to be affected are Daniel Ayala, Ryan Shotton, Jonny Howson, George Friend, Rudy Gestede, Marvin Johnson and Marc Bola.

Woodgate, who is now under pressure to promote more talent from the academy, has endured a difficult start to managerial life, with Boro currently 22nd in the Championship with just two wins from their opening 14 league games.
