Ronaldo sends message to Real Madrid after knocking out Atletico

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t forget his Real Madrid links after knocking rivals Atletico out of the Champions League with Juventus, sending a message to his old club after the game.

The Portuguese superstar scored his eighth European hat-trick in Turin on Tuesday night as the Italian side pulled off a stunning comeback to reach the quarter-finals.

Juve had lost the first leg 2-0 in Madrid, with Ronaldo jeered throughout the match by the home fans, but he responded with three strikes in the second leg to have the last laugh.

After the game, Ronaldo was making his way through the mixed zone with his son and had little intention to stop – until he saw a familiar face. Ronaldo spotted Edu Aguirre, a reporter for Spanish TV show El Chiringuito who broke down in tears when Real Madrid were beaten by Ajax last week, and gave him a big hug.

Although he was keen to make a swift exit, he said: ‘I send a hug to El Chiringuito, [Tomas] Roncero and all Real Madrid fans.’ Roncero, editor of newspaper AS, is another huge Real fan and regular contributor on El Chiringuito who was distraught when Real were knocked out of the Champions League.

But at least they can take some solace from Ronaldo sending their rivals packing, with Atletico throwing away a two-goal first leg lead for the first time in their history. Speaking on the pitch after the game, CR7 also said:

‘This was why Juventus brought me here, to help do things that they have never done before. ‘It was always going to be a special night and it was – not only for the goals but for the team. This is the mentality you need to win in the Champions League. We enjoyed a magical night. Atletico were a difficult team but we were strong too. We will see what will happen.’
