According to FIFA, 24 teams from all over the world will feature in China in two years’ time.

This comes as a major increase as only seven clubs will be part of this year’s version of the tournament.

The FIFA Council have also decided that the Club World Cup will not be a yearly competition anymore and will take place every four years.

As a result, Europe will get the lion’s share of qualification spots as both the champions and runners-up of the UEFA Champions League between 2018 and 2021 will qualify, adding up to eight places in the tournament.

The updated format of the tournament will also see South America get six spots, Asia, and North and Central America with three spots, and Oceania with only one spot.

The qualification process for African clubs will be dependent on the 2021 CAF Champions League, where the finalists of the tournament and the winner of a playoff between the semi-finalists qualify for the 2021 Club World Cup.

The revamped tournament is now set to take place in the summer and starts on 17 June 2021.
