Tornadoes secure first win of the season

There were contrasting results and outcome for topflight teams in the league matches played on Thursday in Group A and B of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

In Group A Sunshine Stars have lost their unbeaten run in Minna after they succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Niger Tornadoes who in turn earned their win of the season under caretaker manager, Hamza Abara.

The Ikon Allah Boys showed they needed the three points better than Kabiru Dogo’s men who could have gone five games unbeaten had they secured even a draw. Awwal Tanko scored the all-important match-winner in the 10th minute of the encounter.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished in the second half when Anthony Omaka was received a second bookable offense to leave the Owens Whales down to 10 men.

The win lifted Tornadoes off the bottom of Group A to 10th with six points from seven games while Sunshine Stars slid a step down to fourth with eight points from five games.

In another Group A tie in Gombe, Wikki Tourists came back from a goal down to beat Enyimba 2-1 in a league tie played at the Pantami Stadium.

Abdulrahman Bashir struck early for the visitors in the 10th minute of the encounter but Abba Umar’s double in the 28th and 47th minutes completed a comeback and ensured that Wikki moved to third in the group with nine points from six games. The People’s Elephant on the other hand plummeted to fifth with eight points from six matches also.

The final Matchday Seven tie in Group A holds today in Katsina between Katsina United and Bendel Insurance.

The tie initially fixed for yesterday was moved by a day because of the Political rally involving the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar which held at the mainbowl of the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina the same venue for the league fixture.
