WCQ: Roberto Mancini to stay on as Italy manager

Italy manager Roberto Mancini has confirmed he will stay on as the national team’s boss despite his team missing out on this year’s World Cup.

Italy were knocked out of the World Cup play-offs after a surprising 1-0 defeat to North Macedonia. Aleksandar Trajkovski’s 92nd-minute goal was the only difference between the two sides.

As a result, they will not be in Qatar later this year.

“We need to start again”, said Mancini. “I talked to the president, we’re in agreements on everything. We’ll have time to discuss what we need to improve.

“I’m still young and I wanted to win a European Championship and a World Cup, we’ll have to wait for the second a little bit. I like this work and I know that with the players we can organise something important.

“Everything else is moving forward.”

Last week, Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina showed his support for Mancini after the defeat to North Macedonia.

“I hope Mancini continues with us,” said Gravina. “He has a commitment with us for this project, I hope he can shake off this elimination just like all the Italians and that he remains at the helm to continue our work together.”
