We didn’t play at our best against South Africa – Ogu

Nigeria qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) courtesy a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Johannesburg but Hapoel Be’er Sheva midfielder, John Ogu acknowledged that it was a below par performance from the Super Eagles on Saturday.

The 30-year-old had the opportunity of making a rare start for the three-time African Champions following the absence of Captain Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi and Wilfred Ndidi through injuries and suspension respectively.

The Eagles were obviously not at their best but could’ve won the game if the referee had not wrongly ruled out two good goals, one on each side of the halves but Ogu reminded grateful for qualification and thanked the fans for their overwhelming support.

Ogu posted on his official tweeted timeline: ‘I’m super Happy with our qualification to the AFCON. I understand our fans wants our A1 game in every game.

‘The only positive out here is the fact that we have Qualified for the AFCON. Thank you to our fans all over the world.’

The Eagles will be returning to the AFCON competition for the first time since they won it in 2013 and have a chance of finishing top of Group E when the host minnows Seychelles in their final fixture of the qualifying series next year.
