Joshua speaks on Fury’s decision to leave trainer Davison

Anthony Joshua has backed Tyson Fury’s decision to leave trainer Ben Davison ahead of his blockbuster rematch with Deontay Wilder.

Fury axed Davison as his coach two months before his world title bout against Wilder. He’s appointed Javan ‘Sugar’ Hill as his new coach.

Wilder slammed Fury for ditching Davison, but ‘AJ’ has defended his decision and doesn’t blame him for changing up his camp.

“Fury has to do what is right for him. Tyson’s success is Ben’s success,” the unified heavyweight champion explained.

“If Fury feels like this is right for him, he has to trust his instinct and follow it because it will only be him that [is in the ring].

“I have to trust my instincts. I was watching a Lennox Lewis fight – he had Emanuel Steward in his corner, but they still only announce ‘Lennox Lewis.’ They don’t mention the team.

“Tyson Fury has to do what’s right for Tyson Fury because it’s only his name that is mentioned when announced as the winner or the loser.

“As a fighter, first and foremost, it doesn’t matter about anyone else.”

Davison has worked with Fury since 2017 and he played a big part in his remarkable comeback, but on Sunday he announced that they had respectfully parted ways.

“Obviously it’s not gonna stop until there’s an answer, Tyson and myself had to both make decisions for our careers, which resulted in our working relationship coming to an end,” he wrote on Twitter. “HOWEVER, we remain friends and he will SMASH the DOSSER!!”

Fury is scheduled to face Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title on February 22 in Las Vegas.
