Jubilation as Falcons qualify for round of 16, face Germany

Nigeria’s Super Falcons finally booked a place in the round of 16 on Thursday after picking the last slot for the best loser at the on-going FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.


Quite an agonising wait which started since Monday, the Falcons sealed their spot after the Chile, Thailand match in Group F which ended 2-0 in favour of the South Americans on Thursday evening.

The Chileans needed three goals to advance to the knockout stage after losing their first and second group matches to the USA and Sweden.

A tantalisng round of 16 fixture against Germany now awaits the Falcons this Saturday (June 22) at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.

The Africa champions joined fellow Africa team, Cameroon who defeated New Zealand 2-0 earlier.

Meanwhile, it was celebration in the Falcons team hotel in Rennes immediately they knew they had qualified.

Players and officials were seen hugging themselves in a video clip posted on Twitter.

This would be the first time Africa would be two representatives in the knockout stage.
