WCQ: Super Eagles will not back down easily, says Iwobi

Fulham ace Alex Iwobi has said the Super Eagles are disappointed they could only manage two draws in their first two 2026 World Cup qualifiers, but they will push to the end to grab the ticket to the Mundial.

The Eagles had to fight from behind against both lowly-rated Lesotho and Zimbabwe to record 1-1 draws in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers that also has South Africa, Rwanda and Benin.

“We are disappointed with the draws considering the quality of the players,” Iwobi said.

“But we will forge ahead and push to the end.”

He gave credit to Zimbabwe for getting a draw with Nigeria.

“Scoring the first goal made it a lot easier for them,” he said.

Bafana Bafana of South Africa will be expected to widen the gap with the other teams in their qualifying pool Tuesday when they visit Rwanda, while Lesotho host Benin in South Africa.

In June 2024, Nigeria will hope to make up for these dropped points when they welcome South Africa to Uyo before a tricky trip to Benin.
